Saturday we gave ourselves the chance to sleep in after a late return the night before. It was nice to make some breakfast and have some more space to get ready in that our small hotel room in Amsterdam. I forgot to mention that amongst our exploring on Friday we had our first pain au chocolat (yummy chocolate croissants!) and picked up a few for Saturday morning breakfast. This is the new trend...pain au chocolat everyday. There just isn't anything like French pastries in France, except thankfully Trader Joe's has a great frozen chocolate croissant that we enjoy at home on occasion to get our fix.
I could go on and on about chocolate croissants all day, so I will stop now, and continue on with our adventures! After our leisurely morning we picked up a few more things we thought we would like from the Monoprix, such as a bottle of wine, and after everything was in its place at the apartment we went off in search of the Louvre. We very nicely executed the "Louvre Lite" tour and saw the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory and Venus de Milo. Obviously we saw plenty of other things on the way to these but they were definitely at the top of the list to view while there! We had a crepe dinner along the Rue de Rivoli (or Rue de Ravioli as David keeps calling it) and also had some dessert crepes a little closer to home before calling it a day.
A lot of cafes, boulangeries (bakeries), and stores (such as the grocery store) are closed on Sunday which we had prepared for on Saturday. We had our pain au chocolat ready for our breakfast enjoyment along with some eggs and some great stuff to make for dinner. In between those two we made our way to Notre Dame and given that it was Sunday, a service was taking place while we walked through. We got to hear the choir sing but the organ is not currently working, it is apparently not going to be working again until December so that was too bad, but it was a beautiful tour through the inside regardless.
Next up was the Musee d'Orsay so we could take in all kinds of great French Impressionist art. This was at the top of my list. Having studied French in high school, we spent some time on French Art History and this is the art that I truly enjoy. Monet, Degas, Renoir, all so wonderful. There was even a special Degas exhibit going on so we checked that out as well.
After being out and about with some stops into little shops along the way, we decided to head back to the apartment and think about making dinner. Some cooked up chicken, spinach and mozzarella ricotta and asparagus. Pair that with some wine and slice of chocolate cake we had picked up the day before and we had a wonderful meal!
Then it was time to rest, we had a very busy day ahead of us on Monday!
